Induced hygroscopicity: Gated humidity-responsive actuation is achieved through a base treatment to establish a gradient of deprotonated carboxylic acid groups, leading to anisotropic swelling upon water intake. Upon photothermal heating, the humidity inside the film both depletes the swelling and decreases the LC alignment. Reproduced with permission.[56]Copyright 2018, Wiley-VCH.
