Monomers can interact with lipids to form an alpha-helical structure at the N terminus, which can later assemble into lipid-associated conformations. Aggregation-prone monomers can self-associate into soluble toxic protofibrils. By contrast, lipid-associated alphaS can resist unfolding and aggregation.
