The cRFXa sub-family is widespread in choanoflagellates. RFX family relationships were determined from predicted protein sequences using maximum-likelihood phylogenetic trees built by IQ-TREE (Figure S1A; Data S1, File S1). All RFX TFs in choanoflagellates grouped into one of three well-supported sub-families: cRFXa, cRFXb, and cRFXc. For representative choanoflagellates, the presence (filled circle) or absence (open circle) of each sub-family is indicated. Although cRFXa was detected in all cultured choanoflagellates that have been sequenced, cRFXb and cRFXc were restricted to subsets of choanoflagellate diversity.
