Diagrammatic representations of the local spin energy in the centre of the cloud as a function of the magnetization Z. The first four diagrams correspond to different points across the ramp on delta, whereas the last two compare the initial condition at the end of the ramp and the condition after a waiting time t. The system is initially prepared in the |up> state. As delta decreases, a second minimum appears, and at delta < 0, the system is in the metastable state, eventually tunnelling across the barrier.
