The strain field within the flake is calculated within the graphene flake by considering changes in the bond distances between the non-strained flake (dark grey lines) and the strained atom positions (green in the ball-and-stick representation). Only bonds which are predominantly in the x direction are considered (for example, the bond highlighted in (a)). Differences in bond distance (r'-r) and the difference in the x component of the bond are calculated, and converted to a local bond strain by dividing by r and the x component of the unstrained bond, respectively. The local bond strains are binned along the x direction of the flake into 300 strips.
