Scanning electron micrographs from an ion-sectioned transversal plane of the shells illustrating the absence of the organic interfaces in the single-crystal-like prism of P. nobilis (SCL). In contrast, the polycrystalline prism (PC) and the nacreous layer of Pinctada possess thick and repetitive organic interfaces, respectively. The panels share the same scale bar.
