Our proposed model on the activity-dependent synaptic competition. Strong glutamatergic inputs at a presumptive “winner” dendrite leads to the local suppression of RhoA to protect it from pruning. The subsequent depolarization induces the neuron-wide activation of RhoA, leading to the pruning of non-protected dendrites (lateral inhibition). NMDAR-dependent local signals also activate Rac1 to stabilize the dendrite.52.
