Surface projection (top row) and optical cross-sectional (bottom row) images of immature and mature air chambers from wild type, Mprop-3, and Mprop-4. In wild type, anticlinal cell divisions form the air chamber roof. This takes place in Mprop-4but not in Mprop-3. In wild type, a change in cell division orientation from anticlinal to periclinal facilitates air pore formation. This was not observed in Mprop-3or Mprop-4. Air pore cells are highlighted in yellow, roof cells in blue, and epidermal air chamber wall cells in green. Asterisks mark epidermal cells forming the aperture boundary visible in the optical cross-sectional images. Scale bars: 50 μm
