Probability of a 36,630-nucleotide phage genome having at least 97.7% unaltered nucleotides over a period of 1300 years. The probability was calculated using a binomial cumulative distribution function assuming different mutation rates reported in the literature 6 , 7 , 35 . The blue and green lines represent the mutation rates due to substitutions and recombinations in lytic phages, with rates of 4.690 10 -3 and 1.976 10 -4 altered nucleotides per site per year, respectively. The green line includes a rate of 1.154 10 -4 altered nucleotides per site per year due to substitutions in temperate phage genomes.
