Post-sampling actions. Participants completed three variants of the task that differed in the actions they were required to perform after gathering information. In the Observe (non-instrumental) block, participants merely progressed to the next trial after revealing a prize (in this example, 315 points). In the Estimate block, participants made a second decision about whether the sum of the prizes was greater or smaller than 500 points. In the Intervene block, participants made a second decision whether to keep the prize they revealed or exchange it for the average (EV) of the lottery. In all figures, we use blue for Observe, red for Estimate, and yellow for Intervene blocks.
