The band inversion strength M0, where |M0|=(ECB−EVB)/2, is tracked against the lattice constant of (A) SnTe and (B) Bi2Te3. The M0 value is calculated at the L-point for SnTe and at the Γ-point for Bi2Te3. M0 of SnSe and SnTe follow the same trend, indicating that band inversion is primarily driven by atomic orbital interactions and crystal field splitting. On the other hand, since SOC prompts band inversion in tetradymite systems, M0 of Bi2Se3 is far from the trend of Bi2Te3.
