Warming patches superposed on the subsidence branch regions induce anomalous ascent, reducing the prevailing descent which opposes the Hadley and Walker circulation. Together with the decreased zonal and equatorial SST gradient, it weakens the circulation, leading to weakened global-mean ascent ( ${\Delta {\omega }}_{500}^{+} > 0$ ) and decreased convective mass flux ( $\Delta {M}_{rm{c}}/{M}_{rm{c}} < 0$ ).
