Schematic and experimental illustration of liposome motion driven by Min quasi-stationary patterns. The Min proteins (MinD, magenta; MinE, green) are added into the liposomeSLB membrane (grey) system; subsequently, the liposomes deform asymmetrically and move. The asymmetric shapes of the liposomes promote asymmetric MinE distribution due to a generic diffusional limitation effect. Thus, liposome motion (grey arrow) and Min pattern reorganization (green arrow) set up a mechanochemical feedback loop.
