Maps show the ensemble mean climatology of average occurrence timing of dry-to-wet whiplash over the current period (1979–2019) in the CESM-LENS ensemble. The lines accompanying the maps show the zonal means of the climatology of the corresponding characteristic derived from the CESM-LENS, CMIP6, and six precipitation datasets. Note that CHIRPS only have a coverage of 50S–50N land area and GPCC and REGEN_LongTermStns have a coverage of land only. The orange (blue) shaded area shows the spread of zonal mean values in 90% of the CESM-LENS (CMIP6) ensemble. The purple boxes in maps indicate the northeastern China region used for the analysis of large-scale circulation background during precipitation whiplash (Fig. 6 ).
