Model of petal spot initiation in G. diffusa Springbok. Ray florets develop successively at an angle of ca. 132. The first few (in this flower: three) ray florets develop under GdSPL1 expression, which initiates petal spot formation. In subsequently developing ray florets, GdmiR156 represses GdSPL1, terminating the spot developmental program (see also Table S4).
