The position of the anterior neuropore provides oriented sensing. The neural tube lumen serves as a cavity, where the gradient of a chemical signal forms along the length of the tube. The receptors deployed along the inner surface of the neural tube lumen sense different amounts of molecules depending on the distance from the neuropore (which can face different directions dynamically). The emergence of a posterior neuropore could improve gradient sensing by controlling the active flow inside the neural tube lumen.
