A t -SNE analysis revealed that the information bottleneck encoder layer appears to learn a useful representation of the objective levels of cardinality. This is evident from the fact that different angles (blue-to-yellow colour scale) are generally represented in different portions of the multi-dimensional encoding space. The smooth gradient of transition between angle representations might be beneficial for downstream circuits to implement decision rules.
