Cardiolipin promotes mitochondrial fusion, particularly by acting as anchor for L-Opa1 in trans to fuse the IMM, which is further favored by S-Opa1 (see alsoFigure 4). The minimal machinery required for fusion to occur operates with CL in one mitochondrion and L-Opa1 in ttrans.112CL can be converted to PA by mitochondrial phospholipase D (MitoPLD), both acting to foster OMM fusion mediated by Mfns.
