Bivariate regression analyses for random ensembles of 20 units (n = 1,746) to analyze the relationship between tuning properties of the ensemble and the discrimination performance measured by the PCC. Each point in these scatterplots corresponds to an ensemble of 20 units. The average entropy selectivity over all units in the ensemble: this index also ranges between 0 and 1 and is based on the PCC of the decoder, which takes into account temporal patterns in the spike trains (see STAR Methods).
