Formation of the PhLi gel block: (i) an oven-dried vial, containing PhLi, Bu 2 O, C 36 H 74 (16.7% wt/vol) and a N 2 balloon; (ii) gentle heating (heat gun) is applied until the gelator dissolves (under N 2 ); (iii) the warm hydrosol is transferred to a syringe (under N 2 ); (iv) after cooling (ice water), the gel is removed from the syringe by cutting to give the PhLi gel block, which is stable to handling in a gloved hand.
