Histology typically features polio-predominant, perivascular lymphohistiocytic cuffs (solid boxes) and angiocentric infiltrates (dashed boxes). They are most prominent in brain stem (Po). Leptomeningeal infiltrates (white arrowhead) also occur in areas with sparse parenchymal infiltration such as the cerebellum (Cer). Stain: haematoxylin eosin (H.E.). Anatomical landmarks: Cer: cerebellum; CWM: cerebellar white matter; GLC: granule cell layer of cerebellar cortex; GLD: granule cell layer of dentate gyrus; NCR: neocortical ribbon; PL: pyramidal cell layer; Po: pons; V IV : fourth ventricle; V L : lateral ventricle. Cats: SWE_04. Representative images of RusV-infected cats are presented. All case and control cats (n = 29 each) were analysed. Histopathological diagnoses are provided in Supplementary Tables 3 and 4.
