Graphical depiction of SPM data in 1D. The line depicts an artificial atomic surface SS, the dotted line is the image II after dilating the true surface with the probing element pp. The dilation is the natural mathematical model of the equipotential (in STM) movement of the probe across the surface. The striped line depicts the least upperbound on the recoverable surface RR. Notice especially region (A) the image II and surface SS have the same shape at the maxima disregarding some offset in yy; and (B) a blunt probe cannot fully recover surfaces within crevices between atoms.
