Metabolites are exported for different reasons, including to maintain metabolic homeostasis via overflow metabolism, contributing to the exometabolome. At the same time, cells sense and import metabolites from the surrounding environment. These dynamic export/import processes result in the exchange of metabolites between co-growing cells and the establishment of intercellular metabolic interactions.
