By tracking gaze and controller interactions, our VR protocol allowed us to quantify sensory sampling during the encoding stage and memory usage during the pick-up and placement stage of each behavioral sequence. Importantly, task-relevant sensory information remained accessible within the external environment, which allowed participants to freely structure their behavior and refer back to the model display at any point during the task (highlighted as resampling possible). Resampling could occur after using identity memory to select an object from the resource pool or using location memory to place the selected object in the workspace (orange arrows).
