On the application of ultraviolet light, SDS-AzoTAB precipitate takes a coacervate form, which partitions into the droplet, generating a local low interfacial tension gradient and raising the internal interfacial tension, actuating the droplet. On application of blue light, coacervated AzoTAB-SDS crystallizes, preferring the aqueous phase, and on exit of the droplet generates another local interfacial tension gradient.
