Blastocystis colonisation might influence the gut–brain axis by modulating gut microbial composition, regulating SCFA production, and altering tryptophan metabolism, thereby influencing serotonin levels and gut–brain communication. In the gut–metabolic axis, Blastocystis colonisation is associated with improved cardiometabolic biomarkers, including lower BMI and healthier metabolic profiles. Blastocystis might contribute to intestinal homoeostasis by modulating gut microbial metabolism and promoting immune cell balance. SCFA=short-chain fatty acid.
