Verification of marker genes for the large-cell B. thetaiotaomicron morphotype using single-molecule FISH on wild-type cells. Cells were stained with DAPI (blue) and the indicated transcripts detected with gene-specific HCR-FISH probes, according to the color code given at the top of each image. 16S rRNA served as a general marker of the bacterial cytosol, while probes against a non-transcribed intergenic region (IGR) or antisense to a highly transcribed gene (fabDRC) were included as negative controls.
