Two distinct conserved regions, 5' (black box) and 3' (red box), separated by a variable gap of ~12 bp, have been observed within them. Based on the conservation of these regions, three types of motifs (1-3) can be defined. The chlF motif (1) represents the most highly conserved sequence, ~61 bp in length. It contains highly conserved 5' and 3' regions. Long motifs (2), ~59 bp, are found upstream of other FaRLIP genes, but their 5' region is less conserved. Yet other genes may only have a short motif (3), 33 bp, equivalent to only the conserved 3' region.
