Intravaginally administered recombinant IFN-β (rIFN-β) restoresN. gonorrhoeaevaginal colonization inIfne−/−mice to levels seen in WT mice. Estradiol pellet-treated WT C57BL/6 mice andIfne−/−mice (n= 5 mice/group) were colonized with 4.7 × 107CFUN. gonorrhoeaeFA1090 and treated daily (day −1 [the day before infection] through day 8) intravaginally with 2.34 μg IFN-β, 2.34 μg rIFN-ε, or an equal volume (18 μL) of vehicle (saline) as a comparator (n= 5 per group). Vaginas were swabbed daily to enumerate CFUs. Kaplan-Meier curves showing time to clearance. Comparisons were made by Mantel-Cox test.
