Each plaquette on the ladder features O 2 p (grey) and Cu 3 d (blue) orbitals constituting a ZhangRice singlet. At equilibrium, the approximate D 4 h symmetry of the ZhangRice singlet results in vanishing hopping t ap = 0 between the CuO 4 plaquette and the apical oxygen.
