Simplified energy-level diagram of the 171 Yb + ion. Doppler cooling, optical pumping and state detection are carried out using the standard resonance fluorescence scheme described in ref. 50 . Phase-coherent operations on the second-order magnetic field sensitive | F = 0, m F = 0〉 to | F = 1, m F = 0〉 transition and first-order sensitive | F = 0, m F = 0〉 to | F = 1, m F = +1〉 transition are driven by resonant microwave fields.
