Replicational strand classification. DNA replication starts at multiple origins of replication at the same time bidirectionally at both strands. Having the same direction for DNA synthesis and replication fork migration enables continuous DNA synthesis, which results in regions on the leading strand, whereas opposite directions of DNA synthesis and replication fork cause discontinuous DNA synthesis in small fragments, termed, Okazaki fragments, on the lagging strand.
