A linear encoding model was built using both discrete and continuous variables (regressors) that included both aversive and other (non-aversive) behaviors, as well as the stimulus context (social or object). This generated weights for each regressor that determined how well each behavior variable was encoded by the activity of a particular neuron (expressed as a Z -score of firing rates) on a trial-by-trial basis.
