Schematic diagram of drug combinations to overcome resistance in targeted therapy. Targeted therapy can be effective in treating cancer, but resistance to these drugs can develop over time. Drug combinations can be used to overcome this resistance by targeting multiple pathways or mechanisms involved in cancer growth and survival. The figure illustrates three different drug combination strategies: (1) combination of two targeted therapies, (2) combination of targeted therapy and chemotherapy, and (3) combination of targeted therapy and immunotherapy. These combinations can work synergistically to kill cancer cells and prevent resistance from developing. The figure also shows the potential for using biomarkers to predict which patients are most likely to respond to specific drug combinations.
