Electroβ-cell. This cell ectopically expresses CaV1.2/Kir2 as well as a proinsulin cassette, which is expressed in an unstimulated condition, resulting in accumulation of proinsulin in granule vesicles. Electrostimulation opens ion channel circuits, thereby triggering a high calcium concentration in the cytoplasm, which eventually leads to membrane depolarization, followed by the release of mature insulin within about 10 min after induction.
