Choice behavior of test-compound-experienced bumblebees over three consecutive foraging bouts (R1–R3) on a mixed array of flowers emitting olfactory cues only (antenna circled), immediately followed by 3 consecutive foraging bouts on a mixed array of flowers emitting gustatory cues (proboscis circled; experiment 4). Bees had a choice between nectar (4-oxoisophorone, OXO; vanillin, VAN) and non-nectar (linalool, LIN; benzaldehyde, BEN) compounds identified in I. capensis and I. pallida flowers. Data represent the proportion of forager visits to the nectar compound (mean ± SE; solid line = proportion expected given random flower selection).
