Neuronal ER-phagy plays a crucial role in regulating presynaptic excitatory neurotransmission by controlling ryanodine receptor (RyR)-mediated calcium release from axonal ER stores. The loss of autophagy due to the ablation of neuronal ATG5 has been shown to completely block presynaptic long-term potentiation mossy fiber synapses (mf-LTP) in the hippocampal CA3 region.
