Leveraging optogenetics-based approaches, light can be used to activate genetically encoded ion channels that then induce neuronal depolarization in certain brain regions. Examining the effects of light-mediated activation or inhibition of select neuronal populations or circuits on changes in behavioral phenotypes can be used to correlate specific brain regions with natural and anomalous behaviors.
