Relative contributions to entropy production arising from different interaction orders. We considered 200 random groups of three, five, and seven brain areas. Asterisks indicate those interaction orders that yielded a significantly lower fraction of entropy production compared to the second order, with p values of less than 0.05 in a one-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Overall, pairwise interactions are consistently identified as a major driver of non-equilibrium dynamics.
