Putative sources of intracellular and extracellular Ca2+triggering AIS plasticity. AIS plasticity could be caused by extracellular Ca2+entry through synaptic NMDA R and somatodendritic Cav1 channels. Local Ca2+entry at the AIS can be mediated by Nav1 and Cav2/3 channels, whereas the cisternal organelle could locally release Ca2+intracellularly via ryanodine receptors (RyR).
