Hypothetical Ca2+signals that could lead to an adapted AIS remodeling. We envision that Ca2+signal in terms of amplitude, duration, and/or frequency could trigger AIS reorganization, spanning from alteration of (i) AIS composition to (ii) AIS localization and ultimately (iii) disruption of the AIS during excitotoxicity.
