HPhP dispersion branches within hBN’s second Reststrahlen band calculated for the device sketched in the central inset (TR1 in c ) and a Fermi energy E F = 30 meV (see Supplementary Information section III for full details). The dispersion branches are observed from the maxima of the imaginary part of the reflection coefficient r p for p-polarized light. Vertical confinement results in the emergence of HPhP modes (the zeroth and first order modes are labelled M0 and M1, and indicated by arrows). The small-wavevector region (dashed red box) is responsible for far-field electroluminescence, whereas the large-wavevector region (dashed blue box) is responsible for near-field energy transfer from graphene’s electrons to hBN.
