Model of the interplay between HK1 and Drp1 receptors. Left graph shows that during glucose depletion Mff clusters disassemble at positions of HK1-ring formation. During glucose readdition, HK1-rings disassemble and the majority of mitochondria revert to their original shape. Only at a few mitochondria, Mff can form clusters upon disassembly of HK1-rings, triggering mitochondrial fission. The right graph shows that HK1-rings form at positions of MiD51 rings during glucose depletion. MiD51 rings do not disassemble at positions of HK1-rings. Upon glucose readdition, MiD51 ring disassembly triggers mitochondrial fission.
