Schematic depiction of LC activity fluctuations, together with associated NA output, spectral signatures (sleep spindle frequency) and autonomic fluctuations (heart rate and other autonomic parameters, such as pupil diameter), which are driven by LC activity fluctuations in NREM sleep. The fluctuation phase during which MAs appear predominantly is symbolized by gray-shaded horizontal bars. More recently, LC fluctuations during NREM sleep were demonstrated to also drive blood volume and perivascular CSF flow variations.
