Absorption of dietary TG requires two rounds of hydrolysis and re-esterification before reaching the target tissue. Dietary TG is hydrolyzed into smaller units (FAs, glycerol, and monoacylglycerols [MAGs]) and internalized by intestinal enterocytes where MAG/FAs undergo re-esterification to TG and are packaged and secreted as chylomicron particles. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) then hydrolyzes TG to FAs and MAGs which is then taken up by target tissue. In adipocytes, FAs are re-esterified once again into TG molecules for storage within lipid droplets (LDs).
