Scheme of the experiment. 8-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed either a WD for 5 months or a choline-deficient high-fat diet (CD-HFD) for 8 months to induce NASH. At this point, mice were evenly distributed across the different treatment arms. Mice were then continued on the diets under ad libitum conditions or underwent the IF (5:2) regimen to assess NASH-HCC transition 15 months post diet start. All mice were dissected in a fed state. Thus, fasted mice were sacrificed 48 h (2 days) after the culmination of the last fasting cycle. This ensured that the fasted mice were also in a fed state, aligning with the ad libitum controls, at the time of sacrifice.
