Experimental scheme. 8-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed a choline-deficient high-fat diet (CD-HFD) for 32 weeks to induce NASH. CD-HFD ad libitum mice were given free access to food and water. Mice under CD-HFD (5:2–12 h) regimen were fasted for 2 non-consecutive days per week, with each fasting cycle lasting 12 h from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Mice under an IF (6:1–24 h) regimen were fasted for 1 day per week from 7 p.m. to 7 p.m., with each fasting cycle lasting 24 h. All mice were dissected in a fed state. Thus, fasted mice were sacrificed 48 h (2 days) after the culmination of the last fasting cycle. This ensured that the fasted mice were also in a fed state, aligning with the ad libitum controls, at the time of sacrifice.
