Following skin wounding in mice, protective and thermoregulatory functions of the fur are preserved either through numerous pre-existing hairs at wound edges when wounds are small (left) or through de novo formation of more hair follicles in the center of large wounds (right). Skin measures wound dimensions, regenerating new follicles only in large wounds.
