False-coloured scanning electron microscope image of a device nominally identical to that used in the measurements. The eight quantum dots are labelled 18 and the four charge sensors to measure the charge states in the quantum dots are labelled S TL , S TR , S BL and S BR , respectively. The quantum dot potentials are controlled by plunger gates P i , and the interdot or dot–sensor tunnel couplings are controlled by barrier gates b i j or b i , with i or j denoting the corresponding quantum dot number. A schematic of the ladder structure of the quantum dots is shown on top, with Q1Q4 formed by vertical DQDs.
