The frequency of homomers and monomers in selected taxa (Gram-negative bacteria, mammals, Plasmodium [malaria parasite]) with different amino acid metabolism (numbers indicate the number of clusters). Plasmodium takes up most amino acids from its host, in mammals most hydrophobic amino acids are essential, while most bacteria can synthesise all amino acids. (See also Supplementary Fig. 11 ).
